Segesta and the Zingaro Reserve, Trapani
The Zingaro Natural Reserve, (Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro), is a protected area spread along a spectacular section of coast on the eastern side of the gulf, Golfo di Castellamare, where high rock walls, diving into the blue below, alternate with coves opening gently into the sea.
How to get here: from Palermo: take freeway A29 toward Trapani to the exit for Castellamare del Golfo. Continue on State road 187 toward Trapani and after approximately 4 Km enter the road to Scopello. After a few km you will see the tunnel signalling the entrance to the preserve.
The Riserva dello Zingaro can be crossed only on foot along three different itineraries, allowing enjoyment of one of the most pristine environments of the Mediterranean and sightings of the numerous animal species living in the reserve.
Thirty-nine species of birds nest in this area, including peregrine falcons, Bonelli's eagles, buzzards, Eurasian kestrels, barn owls, and tawny owls … all in an environment rich in endemic plants typical of Mediterranean flora.
Inside the reserve are the Museo Naturalistico (Naturalist Museum), Museo delle Attività Marinare (Museum of Marine Culture) and the Museo della Civiltà Contadina (Museum of Farm Culture).

Toward Segesta
Our itinerary from Castellamare del Golfo heads inland toward Alcamo and further on to Calatafimi, passing through a region of hills and vineyards: this is the heart of the renowned Alcamo Doc wine region, where the grape varieties Nero d'Avola and Catarratto, raised with modern viticulture techniques, produce highly-prized wines.
The route ends at ancient Segesta. The breathtaking ruins of this ancient city are arrayed on Mount Barbaro and immersed in a landscape of undisturbed peace and harmony.
- The fifth century B.C. Doric Temple stands intact in all its majesty on a hill in the center of a lovely little valley. It has perimeter wall of 60 x 26 meters and is surrounded by 84 columns.
- The Greek amphitheatre dates from the third century B.C. Excavated in the rocks on the summit of Monte Barbaro, it offers an amazing view overlooking the sea.
