'Morgana' Puppet Festival in Palermo
From Wednesday 19 November to Friday 26 December 2007, Palermo will be the site of the 33st edition of the Morgana Puppet Festival, a puppet opera review entirely dedicated to the adventures of the Paladins of France. The show is held at the "Antonio Pasqualino" Puppet Museum and at other sites in Palermo.
The stars of the show will be the historic Palermo "pupari" families, the last depositories of a disappearing art. Their work attempts to keep alive a tradition that is so deeply rooted in Sicilian culture and history that UNESCO has recognized the puppet opera, proclaiming it a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity."
The Museo Internazionale delle Marionette collects marionettes and puppets from all over the world, each containing a wealth of history, culture and curiosity, unique pieces that evoke imaginary worlds both near and far.
The intention of the Festival is to recover the ancient puppet-master tradition that dates from the first half of the 19th century but has its roots in the medieval ballad-singer tradition. The puppeteer tradition draws on the knightly epic poems and stories from the 15th and 16th centuries: the Chanson de Roland, Orlando Innamorato (Orlando in love), Orlando Furioso (Mad Orlando) and the Morgante, a fantastic universe populated by heroes, ladies and bizarre creatures.
