Festival of Santa Lucia
The feast day of Santa Lucia, the patron saint of Siracusa, is celebrated in December.
The focal point of the festivities in honor of the patron of Siracusa is December 13: an imposing procession leads off from the Duomo, at Ortigia, and the statue of the saint is carried on the shoulders of sixty men to the Basilica which bears its name. This procession is followed by two rows of devotees dressed in green tunics, bearing candelabras, and by an 18th century carriage with characters in costume. The statue remains on display for the veneration of the faithful until December 20, when it makes its annual return to its chapel in the Cathedral. During these feast days, it is customary to prepare the "uccioli" and "cuccia".
In conjunction with the celebrations of Santa Lucia, a Swedish delegation arrives in Siracusa to participate in the various initiatives in honor of the patron saint. Indeed, numerous initiatives tied to Santa Lucia are also held in Sweden from December 3 to January 6, which in Scandinavia marks the return of daylight.
